This is the limited slipcased English language edition of this very rare book. The success of the 328 was due to the sum of the parts: ruthless and clever light-weight construction, optimum weight distribution, sound aerodynamics, string and efficient power for the 2 litre class and light easy handling from meticulous chassis design using rack and pinion steering. The BMW stood out as well for its good looks and quality of its detailed finish – the first of the modern sports cars. This book analyses and describes the origins and technical developments of the 328, of which 484 were built from 1936 to 1940. Forty eight with right hand drive were marked as Frazer Nash BMW’s. The book also documents the racing career which validates the reputation of the 328 as one of the world’s greatest dual purpose sports cars. The 328’s attributes also qualified it as a sound base for many future developments under the guise of other marques such as Veritas, AFM and EMW which are covered by Rainer Simons. Not forgetting of course the development of the 328 engine into the 2 litre Bristol unit of the post war period, also used in the Arnolt Bristol’s of Chicago. The contents of this book, with its numerous unpublished illustrations and original documents, make a vital contribution to European automotive history and as well as recognition of the fabulous 328.
